It all has to do with our different gene makeup. You may not even have similar hair as your parents- your hair type could have been passed down from a different limb of your family tree (or several!). The Hair Chart

Here is a chart that will help you determine your specific hair type. It ranges from Type 1 to Type 4. Each of these types also has a subtype. The subtypes are more specific in helping you determine your hair type. You will able to learn how to better care for your hair once you determine your hair type.

For instance those with type 4C hair have the hardest to manage type- with frizzy, tight curls. Oftentimes people with this type of hair use chemical treatments to attempt to tame their hair. This causes them to lose their natural hair texture. It can take years to get it back to a healthy, natural state. The over-processing causes this hair type to be very brittle, extremely frizzy and to have an extremely slow growth rate.

These Natural Hair Care Tools can bring back a smooth and silky texture to make the hair more manageable. They can help to bring back a texture that is closer to the hair of your youth. Continue on to determine your specific hair type.

Hair Type 1 – A, B and C

type 1b hair

Those with hair type 1 generally have straight hair. Straight hair also comes with texture, however. Here are the various hair types for category 1:

  • Type 1A- very straight hair without bend, bounce or wave. This hair type can be very difficult to add texture to. Due to this, people with straight hair often use perms in order to get a bit of curl.
  • Type 1B- hair is straight but has some wave to it. Enough to add a bit of bounce and some subtle curves in the wave. This hair type is a bit easier to hold a curl without the need for chemical treatments.
  • Type 1c- a combination of straight hair with some curl. This hair type is more likely to be affected by weather conditions and humidity.

Hair Type 2 – A, B and C

Type 2 hair generally has more texture from waves. The amount of waves varies, however. This is the reason that there is a scale to determine exactly which hair type you have.

  • Type 2A- this hair type generally consists of some loose waves with the hair at the crown of the head tending to be straighter. The waves slowly form down towards the middle of the head but tend to be very fine and thin and do not have much texture to them.
  • Type 2B- this hair type also has straight hair at the crown with waves starting towards the middle. These waves are more defined forming an S shape as they descend to the hair tip, however. These waves are generally a bit more coarse in texture and have a greater tendency to frizz.
  • Type 2c- this hair type has waves from the crown to the tip. The texture of these waves tend to be more along the lines of a tighter curl or ringlet. The texture may be more coarse and the hair thicker. This hair type is also very prone to frizzing.

Hair Type 3 – A, B, and C

Hair type 3 is what most of us long for. Who doesn’t want big, fat, bouncy curls? Type 3 hair types have smooth, shiny and voluminous hair- what is considered very beautiful. This is what many of us strive for. Unfortunately we don’t all necessarily get to have this hair type, though. It is all about the genes.

  • Type 3A- curls with big loose spirals. This hair type is defined by curls that are generally shiny and springy. They have soft texture and a well defined S-shape.
  • Type 3B- these curls are a bit of a tighter curl. Anything from ringlets to corkscrew curls. This hair type experiences more volume and density. The texture tends to lean towards the coarser side.
  • Type 3C- these are the curly-coily type of curls. Extremely tight corkscrew in shape. Those with this hair type will appear to have some shrinkage due to the tightness of the curls. The hair volume will appear more dense with greater volume due to this.

Hair Type 4 – A, B and C

Many people with an ethnic background fall under this hair type. People with this hair type are more apt to seek chemical enhancements or treatments to tame or manage their curly, frizzy hair. But with this new product, that will no longer be necessary. It’s time to love the hair that you were born with! Let us take a closer look at this Type 4 hair.

type 4c hair
  • Type 4A- extremely tight curls with a distinct S shape. Hair is dense with springy coils varying from wiry to fine. The texture of this hair type is generally very coarse and thick.
  • Type 4B- very unique curls which look more like a z-shape pattern with sharp edges and angles. Curls are tighter but less defined in shape. The curl strand has a varied texture from fine and thin to wiry to coarse.
  • Type 4C- very dense, thick and coarse with much less definition in the curls. Curls can range from super fine to wiry and coarse. The curls are very delicate, however, and can be lost easily. This hair type is much more prone to frizzing.
